PALO ALTO, Calif.- The defending national champion Stanford volleyball team swept Arizona 3-0 Friday night to advance to the Final Four of the 2002 NCAA Tournament. Game scores of the match were 30-14, 30-17, 30-25. Arizona concluded its season 20-12 overall.
The Cardinal proved to be too much for the youthful Wildcats on Friday. Stanford dominated all aspects of the match, but it was a particularly strong defensive effort that proved to be the difference on the night. Stanford out-blocked Arizona 12 to 2, and although they only came up with 10 more digs in the match, the Cardinal players continually dug everything Arizona hit at them.
National Player of the Year candidate and Pacific Region MVP Logan Tom led all players with 15 kills on .406. Teammate Ogonna Nnamani finished with 11 kills, while middle blockers Jen Harvey and Sara McGee finished with six and four blocks apiece.
Freshman Kim Glass closed out her historic first season at Arizona with a team-high 10 kills in the loss. Glass and senior teammate Lisa Rutledge were both named to the All-Pacific Region Team after the match.
Arizona's season ended with its third straight Elite Eight appearance and its seventh consecutive 20-win season. Seniors Rutledge, Shannon Torregrosa, Rachel Williams, Christina Frost and Laurie Gardner all played their final matches for Arizona.
