Itˇ?s almost tournament time, and people are beginning to wonder how many Pac-10 womenˇ?s basketball teams will reach postseason play.? Remember, last season the conference got six entries into the NCAA Tournament.? That wonˇ?t happen again. Hereˇ?s what will take place:

1.?????????????????? Stanford is already in.? The Cardinalˇ?s 21 wins should secure a high seed.? However, the recent loss of point-guard J.J. Hones will hurt the teamˇ?s chances to go to the Final Four.

2.?????????????????? ASU may earn a higher seed than Stanford. The Sun Devils have 23 wins, tops in the Pac-10, and could still win the conference championship.? If the Sun Devils win the Pac-10 Tournament, they could earn a No. 3 seed and play deep into March.

3.?????????????????? California earned its way into the field by knocking off Stanford last week. The Bears are 19-6 and are likely to finish third in conference play.? It will be a second consecutive tournament appearance for Joanne Boyle, but it will also be another ˇ?one and out.ˇ±

4.?????????????????? USC is on the bubble but could still get a nod.? The Wildcats face the Trojans on Saturday and will have a say in whether Troy makes the field.? USC is 9-5 in the conference but has only 15 overall wins.? Still, a strong showing in the next two weeks should send them dancing.

1.?????????????????? Washington is just not good enough to earn a trip to the big tournament and will settle for a trip to the expanded National Invitation Tournament (N.I.T.).? The Huskies erratic play and 15 wins will keep them out of the NCAA bracket.

2.?????????????????? UCLA is at .500.? The Bruins are 7-7, 13-13.? They will be invited to the N.I.T. but they rarely accept such invitations.

3.?????????????????? Oregon has a good chance to advance to the N.I.T.? Although the Ducks are 6-8 in the conference, their 14 wins should be enough to help Bev Smithˇ?s team finish with a winning record. Thatˇ?s all you need to play in the ˇ?otherˇ± tournament.

So, six Pac-10 teams will be playing after the regular season.? Only four will be playing for real.? Letˇ?s hope that Stanford and ASU can represent the conference well.? Itˇ?s been a long time since a Pacific-10 representative has played in the Final Four.? This could be the year.
