Women's tennis starts strong at Miner Fall Invite

Las Cruces--The Arizona women's tennis squad kicked off the fall season with a bang on Friday at the Miner Fall Invitational in Las Cruces.

In Flight B singles, senior Ariane Masschelein defeated Tarleton State's Carde Julen 4-6, 6-1, 6-2 in the quarterfinal round after coming out on top over UTEP's Alexandra Glebova 6-2, 7-6(4) in the first round. Up next, Masschelein will take on New Mexico State's Natalia Salum on Saturday at 9am.

Also in Flight B singles is sophomore Debora Castany, who defeated Lee College's M. Gomez 6-2, 6-4 after defeating OLLU's Jessica Perez 6-0, 6-0. Tomorrow, Castany will take on NMSU's Ginet Pinero at 9am in the semifinal round.

In Flight C singles, freshman Shannon Cassidy made her Wildcat debut with a win over Lee College's G. Stephenson 3-6, 6-1, 6-0 in the quarterfinals after defeating Tarleton's Mariana Esteves de Freitas 3-6, 6-1, 6-2 in the first round. Up next, Cassidy will go up against UTEP's Austin Lavallii at 9am in the semifinals.

In Flight B doubles, Masschelein and Castany had a first round bye before they took on OLLU's Audrey Alba and Jessica Perez, winning 8-2. Saturday at 2 pm, they will go up against Lee's Stephenson and Gomez in the semifinals.

Also in Flight B, Cassidy paired up with UTEP's Carla Murguia, and the pair defeated OLLU's Monserrat Sierra and Elizabeth Holguin 8-1 after a first round bye. The Wildcat/Miner pair will take on UTEP's Marina Deluca and Veronika Makashov tomorrow at 2pm.
