            Brian Prouty claims individual medalist honors by four strokes

               

TUCSON, Ariz. ?- Led by four players in the top-20 places, the UNLV men’s golf team captured the PING-Arizona Intercollegiate title Tuesday at Arizona National Golf Club.

 

Battling rain all day, the Rebels posted a four-under 279 tally in Tuesday’s final round en route to a 23-under 829 total and a four-stroke victory.  UNLV’s C.J. Gatto (4th), Jarred Texter (T5th), Ryan Keeney (T16th) and Eddie Olson (T20th) all finished in the top-20 places to help the team lead wire-to-wire.

 

Brigham Young (833), Arizona (840), Tennessee (841) and UC-Irvine (842) rounded out the top-five places in the 16-team field.  The event is major college golf’s first event of the spring season.  UA’s third-place finish equaled its best placing in six team events this season.

 

Arizona’s Brian Prouty claimed individual medalist honors with a 14-under 199 total.  The senior from Tucson, Ariz., who was playing in his first tournament this season after undergoing wrist surgery in the fall, registered rounds of 62, 67, and 70 to claim his first career victory.

 

Prouty’s opening-round 62 (-9) Monday equaled the Arizona school record for aggregate total and low round in relation to par.

 

In addition to Prouty, the Wildcat varsity got a tie for 16th place from Nathan Tyler, who carded a four-under 209.  Josh Esler tied for 27th place at 213 (E), while Travis Esway tied for 45th place at 219 (+6).  Ben Fox tied for 85th place at 248 (+35).

 

The Arizona junior varsity finished in eighth place with a four-over 856 total.  Creighton Honeck led the way with a five-under 208 tally and a tie for 13th place.  Trey Denton tied for 30th place at 214 (+1), while Tyler Neal and Pedro Oriol each tied for 45th place at six-over 219.  Josh Wilks tied for 65th place at 13-over 226.

 

Four Arizona golfers also competed in the field as individuals.  Ben Marsh tied for 11th place at six-under 207, while Nicholas Park finished in 19th place at three-under 210.  Brett Carter, who tied for 69th place, and Josh Porter, who finished in 88th place, rounded out the Wildcat contingent.

 

The 54-hole PING-Arizona Intercollegiate was contested at Arizona National Golf Club, a par 71, 6,793-yard layout.

 

The Arizona varsity will next be in action Feb. 21-23 at the John Burns Intercollegiate in Wahiawa, Hawaii.
