TUCSON, Ariz.--Mar Garcia, the younger sister of PGA star Sergio Garcia, has joined the Arizona women's golf team upon entering the University of Arizona at the beginning of this academic semester, head coach Greg Allen has announced.
Garcia, a 5-foot-5-inch freshman from Castellon, Spain, enrolled in courses at UA for the spring semester making her eligible to compete for the Wildcats in the spring season. Coach Allen expects her to make a significant impact on the Arizona squad immediately by providing another reliable golfer in the Wildcats' youthful lineup.
Among Garcia's accomplishments is an appearance in the 2001 AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am with brother Sergio. She also took first-place at the 1999 Spanish Junior for the 21 and under age group when she was 15 years old.
The 18-year-old freshman hails from a family full of accomplished golfers. In addition to her brother Sergio, her father Victor plays on the Senior PGA Tour and another brother, also named Victor, played golf at Francis Marion University.
She will make her debut as a Wildcat when Arizona kicks off the spring season by heading to the TRW Regional Challenge in Palos Verdes, Calif., on Feb. 11. Last season, Arizona finished in first place at the TRW Regional Challenge with an 11-stroke victory.
