TUCSON, Ariz. - A solid finish over the final nine holes helped the #24-ranked Arizona women’s golf team hold on to fourth place with a three-round total of 904 (+40) at the 2008 Windy City Collegiate Championships, completed on Tuesday at the Evanston Golf Club in Skokie, Ill.
Arizona began the day with a share of fourth place, but dropped early strokes as the team started on what has proven to be the more challenging back nine. With both of its first two players shooting 43 on the front, the Wildcats were going to need three solid scores to stay in contention for the top five finish.
Freshman Isabelle Boineau, who was making her varsity debut with the Wildcats this week, helped set the tone by shooting 37 on each side to finish with a 2-over par round of 74 and share 9th place in the tournament at 224 (+8). Senior Amanda Wilson showed her leadership skills by shooting the team’s low round of the tournament with a 73 to also finish at +8. Wilson also was +1 on the back side before shooting 36 over her final nine holes.
Wrapping things up for the Wildcats was Margarita Ramos, who quietly went about her business with little fanfare, but also did her best to keep Arizona in contention. Another 1-over performance on the first set of holes helped her finish with a score of 75 and end the tournament just one shot behind her teammates at 225 (+9).
Purdue held on for the team title at 891, followed by TCU (900) and Michigan (902). Junthima Gulyanamitta of Purdue went wire-to-wire to earn individual honors with a 54-hole total of 212 (-4).
Arizona is back on the road starting on Friday, October 17 as they take part in the Stanford Intercollegiate event, playing one round on each day of the weekend at the Stanford Golf Course in Palo Alto.
