TUCSON, Ariz. ?- No. 58 Arizona men’s tennis extended its undefeated record to 6-0 with an upset victory over No. 45 Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, 6-1. The Wildcats took an early 1-0 lead when they swept the doubles matches. Arizona had a strong showing in singles play, winning five of the six singles matches.

“It is a good start to the season,” said assistant coach Cory Hubbard. “It was one of our goals to protect our home court and go into Pac-10 play undefeated. The team has a lot of confidence and is excited to go on the road trip now and play two top teams.”

In the doubles No. 1 position, senior Jeff Groslimond and sophomore Claudio Christen defeated Mikhail Pavlov and Andrey Kumantsov, 8-3. On the next court, seniors Roger Matalonga and Daniel Andrus, ranked No. 26, were able to improve their record to 2-0 by defeating Raul Morant-Rivas and Jose Zunino, 8-5. On court 3, sophomore Bruno Alcala and redshirt freshman Peter Zimmer completed the sweep, winning 8-3 over Jan Cingel and Joey Farias.

In singles play, Groslimond had his second upset of a ranked player taking down the Islanders No. 51 Kumantsov in straight sets, 6-4, 6-0. Alcala bounced back from his loss yesterday to defeat Zunino 6-3, 6-2.

The Islanders won their lone point on the day when Matalonga  fell to Morant-Rivas, 6-2, 4-6, 6-2. Playing in the No. 5 spot, sophomore Jason Labrosse was able to clinch the Wildcats victory with his win over Cingel, 7-5, 6-2. Christen took three sets to beat Pavlov in the No. 4 position, 6-4, 4-6, 6-3.

Zimmer wrapped up a solid day for the Wildcats with his victory over Sharon Henselijn, 6-1, 6-7 (5-7), 6-3.

“We did great today,” Groslimond said. “It was our biggest match so far, playing a higher ranked team. The team really stepped up.”

The Wildcats begin Pac-10 play next week with their first road matches of the season. Arizona will take on the defending National Championship UCLA Bruins on Friday, Feb. 24, at 1:30 p.m. and then will face off with USC on Saturday, Feb. 25, at 1 p.m.
