ROSLYN, Pa.ˇ?Arizona senior cornerback Antoine Cason has been named a semifinalist for the Chuck Bednarik Award for the nationˇ?s outstanding defensive player of the year, the Maxwell Football Club announced today.

?

Maxwell Football Club President Ron Jaworski announced the final group for that award as well as for the Maxwell Award (outstanding player) and Geoge Munger Award for the college coach of the year. There are 15 candidates for each as selected by the Maxwell Football Club Advisory Committee.

?

The announcement of the winners of the Maxwell and Bednarik Awards will be made during the Home Depot College Football Awards Show that will be broadcast on ESPN on Thursday, Dec. 6. Three finalists for each award will be in attendance for the ESPN broadcast.

?

The Club will announce the winner of the 19th George Munger Award via a press release in December. The formal presentation of these awards will be made at the Maxwell Football Clubˇ?s Awards Dinner, to be held next March in Atlantic City, N.J.

?

Voting for all three of the collegiate awards presented by the Maxwell Football Club will begin on Wednesday November 7th and close on Friday November 30th.

?

Cason earlier this week was named a semifinalist for the Jim Thorpe Award, given annually to the top defensive back in the country, and is under consideration for the semifinal group for the Ronnie Lott Trophy, to be named early next week.

?

The senior from Long Beach, Calif., is among Arizona career leaders with 14 career interceptions and leads the team this year with four. Off the field he started ˇ?Cason Cares,ˇ± a fundraising project to support cancer research, an effort that reportedly has raised more than $5,000.

?

One of the top defenders in the nation, Cason has been a stalwart for the Wildcats from the moment he stepped on campus. Having started and played nearly every snap in 44 career games, he has put together an impressive senior season and joins with senior linebacker Spencer Larsen to give Arizona bonafide playmakers at two levels of the defense.

?

He is third on the team with 62 total tackles. He returned one of his interceptions 60 yards for a touchdown at Oregon State, tallied his first career sack, forced two fumbles and has broken up an Arizona-best six passes this season.

?

Cason, Larsen, offensive tackle Eben Britton, quarterback Willie Tuitama and receiver Anthony Johnson were elected team captains by the squad this season.
