TUCSON - Freshman pitcher Alicia Hollowell dominated from the start and keyed a 6-0 Arizona softball victory with a no-hit, 15-strikeout shutout over Minnesota in the Cats' own Pepsi Arizona Softball Classic.
The loss was the Golden Gophers' first of the year against seven victories. Arizona improved to 12-1 and Hollowell, who tied her career high with the 15 strikeouts, improved to 6-1.
Hollowell struck out the first seven hitters before Hailee Nanchy broke the string and reached base when first baseman Erin Palomarez dropped a throw from shortstop.
Piper Martin held the Cats in check for a few innings until the third, when Wendy Allen followed a double cy Courtney Fossatti, a walk by Lovie Jung and a fielding error with the Cats' third grand slam home run of the year to make it 4-0.
Jung hit a two-out solo home run, her eighth of the year, to make it 5-0 in the bottom of the fourth. UA loaded the bases with no outs on successive infield singles by Lisha Ribellia, Allyson Von Liechtenstein and Autumn Champion, but had to settle for a sacrifice fly by Jung for another run.
The losing pitcher was Piper Marten (3-1).
