Women?s Tennis Lands Three on All-Academic Teams

WALNUT CREEK, Calif. ?- Arizona women’s tennis players Stephanie Balzert, Iza Oreng Ferreria and Camelia Todorova have been named to 2006 Pacific-10 Conference All-Academic teams, Commissioner Tom Hansen announced Friday.


To be eligible for selection to the academic team, a student-athlete must have a minimum 3.0 overall grade-point average and be either a starter or significant contributor.


Balzert, a senior, was selected to the All-Academic First Team. A native of Puetlinger, Germany, Balzert boasts a 3.67 grade point average as a Spanish major. On the court, she earned a singles record of 12-17 on the year.


Ferreria, a senior, earned recognition on the All-Academic Second Team. A mechanical engineering major with a 3.45 GPA, the 5-3 native of Florianopolis, Brazil, posted a 3-4 record in singles action this season.


Todorova received honorable mention recognition. The 5-2 sophomore from La Jolla, Calif., tallied a 17-15 record in singles play this past season, and won the deciding match in the Wildcats’ 4-1 upset over Brigham Young in the first round of the NCAA Tournament.


Arizona finished the season with a 13-12 record, including their first NCAA victory since 2004. The Wildcats’ season came to an end on May 13, as the team fell to eventual national champion Stanford.
