Day Eight - Pitching Staff Strikes Out 16: The Arizona baseball team played its sixth intrasquad game and at the halfway point in fall ball the white team defeated the gray team 7-2. The gray pitching staff struck out nine hitters in the game while the white team tallied seven punchouts.
Both teams turned in fine pitching performances. White starter and game winner Sean Rierson worked five of the eight innings pitched. The sophomore righty surrendered only one run on four hits and struck out three. He also work out of a jam in the fifth. With runners on second and third and no outs, Rierson struck out Clayton Bried looking and got Will Thompson to line out to first and Brian Anderson to fly out to center to end the inning and the threat. Reliever Tony Sulser, pitching for the gray team, struck out all three batters he faced in one inning of work.
Offensively, Brad Hassey, the white team leadoff hitter, went 2-for-4 with a double, his first home run of the fall and two RBIs. Freshman teammate Jeff Van Houten finshed 2-for-3 with a double, a walk, a RBI and two runs scored.
