Tucson, Ariz. ?- The Arizona women’s gymnastics team (193.350) kicked off their home schedule Friday with impressive victories over Illinois-Chicago (189.600), No. 6 Michigan State (191.975) and No. 23 Missouri (191.700). The Wildcats were led by individual titles on all four apparatus’.
The Wildcats entered the third rotation trailing Michigan State, but rallied back to claim the all-around team title behind solid floor performances. Sophomore Jamie Holton and senior Jamie Duce stared off with 9.775 and 9.875 marks respectively. Senior Katie Johnson capped off the night with a near perfect 9.9 score while earning herself the individual title in the event.
Johnson was also responsible for propelling the Wildcats to an early advantage with her individual title on the vault (9.850). Fellow senior Monica Bisordi (9.825) helped boost the Wildcats with her fourth-place finish on the vault.
Bisordi also claimed the individual title on the balance beam with a mark of 9.825, tying her with Missouri’s Lauren Schwartzman. Johnson again was a key member for the Wildcats as she posted a score of 9.700 on the beam.
Sophomore Aubrey Taylor captured her first individual title of the season with 9.750 score on the uneven parallel bars. The Wildcats also held the third and fourth positions in the event as freshman Karin Wurm (9.650) and senior’s Duce and Jamie Schell (9.625) rounded out the top five.
Bisordi’s all-around total of 38.625 was good enough for a third place finish behind Missouri’s Alisha Robinson (39.025) and Michigan State’s Kristen Coleman (38.700).
With three victories Friday, the Wildcats improved their record to 5-3 on the season. They will begin conference play next week as they host Arizona State.
