COLUMBUS, Ohio-Despite standing tied for 11th place, Arizona's men's golf team is only seven strokes behind tournament leader Georgia Tech after three rounds of the 2002 NCAA Championships being held at the Ohio State University Scarlet Course. The Wildcats shot a third-round 288 (+4) to stand at 8-over-par 860 with one round remaining in the 72-hole tournament.

Georgia Tech shot six-over-par 290 in Friday's third round, but still held on to the team lead as the Yellow Jakcets are at 1-over-par 853 with 18 holes remaining in the championships. Tulsa is in second at 2-over-par, while Pac-10 rival Washington is in third place at 3-over 855. Graeme McDowell of Alabama-Birmingham holds the individual lead as he carded a third-round 67 and is at 8-under-par 205 for the tournament.

Ricky Barnes and Chris Nallen lead the way for Arizona as the duo is tied for 19th place at 1-under-par after 54 holes. Barnes, a 6-foot-1-inch junior from Stockton, Calif., shot 1-under-par 70 Friday. By shooting under par in the third round, Barnes has now been at par or better in 10 of his last 13 rounds.

Nallen, from Blairstown, N.J., stood tied for fourth place after two rounds, but poor conditions including harsh winds and heavy rains hampered the sophomore as he carded a third-round 75. Nallen remained in the top 20, tied for 19th place with three other golfers.

Reid Hatley shot even-par 71 to improve his standing as he moved to a tie for 52nd place. Hatley has finished in 39th and 15th places at the NCAA Championships in his career. Rounding out the Arizona lineup are freshman Kipp Riehle and sophomore Andy Connell. The pair of golfers is tied for 104th place at 9-over-par.

The 2002 men's golf season concludes Saturday with the final round of the NCAA Championships beginning at 7:00 a.m. EDT. Arizona will play with Texas Christian and Florida in the tournament's final round. The three squads will start play on the tenth tee at 8:03 a.m.
