Final Stats

Arizona Head Coach Joan Bonvicini:
"I thought that was the best game we have played so far. They (Washington) were probably our toughest opponent so far this season. They have great three-point shooters and outstanding athletes."

"We were going inside and then back outside. They didn't shoot the jump shot, but penetrated nicely. Polkey really stepped up and challenged them. She was getting her rebounds and got another double-double. Since we changed outlets to half court, it made it tougher on them."

"Washington wouldn't die. Giuliana (Mendiola) kept going. They just wouldn't quit. Washington is a tough team. They will be a tough match-up for anyone."

"CoCoa Sanford came in and was key. Rachel Schein didn't score a lot, but she was a tough defender."

"Giuliana (Mendiola) is a great player. The three is a great shot for her. She always finds her shot on the court."

"This is a good win and a good way to start the Pac-10 season. We have a really good defensive team. That's how you win in the Pac-10. We are definitely stepping it up. I think we need to do a better job rebounding even though we out-rebounded them tonight."

"Rachel (Schein) is a very strong player. She could match up with their strong guards very well and not be intimidated by them. She did a nice job."

"You get respect by earning it. We are going to earn it. This was a good start."

Washington Head Coach June Daugherty:
"I think for us, Arizona's zone defense affected us. They changed the tempo with the press and the zone. We were a little flat, and our execution dropped off."

"There are lessons to be learned, and we addressed that with the team. You can't play the scoreboard all night; you have to play Husky basketball."

"In the first half, we allowed ourselves to get into a big hole. It is tough to come back on the road."

"Arizona's zone defense was very effective. We didn't attack on the short corner of the baseline as much. That allowed them passing lanes. We also tried to pass instead of scoring, and we didn't get the ball movement that we need."

"Arizona did a super job mixing up their defense. It wasn't a surprise, but it pushed us back on our heels and we didn't attack. We have to stay in our system. I credit Arizona; they did a great job defensively."

"For us, we need to be more patient and we would have gotten more easy shots. We got outside of our system. The Pac-10 is full of great teams. If they make runs, we have to stay in our system. I was proud that we were able to get back in the second half."

"I credit Arizona with their great coach. They are a very talented and competitive team. I'm not going to get caught up in our losing streak here. We just need to learn and get ready for a Sun Devil team in two days."

"Jill Bell is a dangerous player. Coming off the bench and almost getting a double-double was great. She did a great job."

"We need to make sure that we learn each step of the way. The Pac-10 is a long, competitive race. We learn each night out, win or lose. Every game is so critical. We can't dwell on the losses or the wins."

"When we get down on a run, we have to stay in our system."

Freshman wing Rachel Schein:
"As a freshman you have to find your spot. It's a great team already. You play where you fit in."

"Our coach prepared us for a physical game. It was a good, hard physical game. It was fun."

"Coach (Bonvicini) said to be ready to come in and play some minutes. I got some good minutes."

"Against a physical player you have to play physical. (Giuliana Mendiola) is a great player. I had to step my game up to match it. If she gets hot she'll kill you."

"It's a boost of confidence for everyone on the team to win in the Pac-10. We're ahead of the game."

Junior guard Dee-Dee Wheeler:
"We focused on our transition offense, pushing the ball up the court. We wanted to defend the three, and they weren't hitting a lot of their threes early."

"We're not getting much respect, but that's all right because teams will take us for granted. I'm not worried about being ranked."

(On playing against Guiliana Mendiola)
"She's a great player. We didn't want her to front our open guards. She hit a lot of shots. We tried to slow her down and get her in foul trouble."

"At halftime we tried to focus on not letting (Guiliana Mendiola) back us down."

"We don't get sick of (the Mendiola sisters). They just prepare us for other physical teams like LSU."

Senior guard Giuliana Mendiola:
"(Arizona) mixed it up well on defense. They took advantage and we dug ourselves in a big hole in the first half, and we couldn't get out."

"I have a lot of confidence in my teammates to hit shots."

"We just didn't come out ready to play. You can't take a night off in the Pac-10."

"(Arizona is) a great team, but for whatever reason we don't play well here. They came out more aggressive, and instead of attacking back, we sat back on our heels."

"As long as there's time on the clock I feel we have a chance to win."

"(Arizona) played a great game and we have to prepare better next time."

"At halftime we were told to keep fighting. (Arizona) dictated the tempo for the whole game."

"We've got a whole day to turn this around. Too bad for ASU, we're going to try to take it out on them."

Freshman forward Jill Bell:
"I was trying to hit the open shots we had."

"We started the game pretty good, but for whatever reason we couldn't come out with the win."

"We went flat. I know we can play with any team in the Pac-10. We just have to bring it every night."
