TUCSON - Hillenbrand Invitational

Game 12 - UTEP at Arizona

Arizona used its speed to start things going, hung on as UTEP rallied to make it a closer contest, then surged again in a 14-6 softball victory over Texas-El Paso Sunday afternoon in the Cats' own Hillenbrand Invitational tournament.

The Miners put together a six-run fifth to spoil what had been a two-hit effort by UA's Leslie Wolfe to that point. UTEP sent 11 batters to the plate, banged out eight hits including three doubles in the inning. It was the most runs scored against Arizona in an inning -- or game -- this year. That made it 9-6, UA.

UA coach Larry Ray, who had freely substituted after the first inning, re-entered his starters in UA's half of the fifth, and scored three runs, then he brought in ace pitcher Alicia Hollowell in the top of the sixth.

Hollowell struck out the side in the sixth. Wolfe (5-0) was credited with the victory. The Cats scored the eight-run rule margin with a pair of runs in the sixth, the final on an RBI single by Kristie Fox.

Arizona batted around in the first inning, collecting six hits, stealing five bases and scoring seven runs to set a quick tone for the afternoon.

UA added an unearned run in the second to make it 8-0. Mackenzie Vandergeest walked, moved to second on an error and scored on a single by Allyson Von Liechtenstein. UA added another run on a solo home run by Vandergeest in the third to make it 9-0 before the Miners' rally.

The Wildcats improved to 25-0 with its four victories over the weekend. UTEP, in its first year of competition as a softball program, fell to 3-11.
