Palo Alto, Calif. - The Arizona women's tennis team (5-11) competed at No. 1 Stanford (20-0) this afternoon. Arizona was unable to win any matches as Stanford came away with all three doubles matches, as well as all six singles matches. This gave Arizona its first 7-0 loss of the season.
In doubles action, Arizona lost on all three courts. The No. 9 ranked team of juniors Maja Mlakar and Dianne Hollands fell to the No. 1 ranked team of Lauren Barnikow and Erin Burdette, 8-2. Freshman Kasia Jakowlew and senior Debbie Larocque lost their match, 8-3. The closest match in doubles came on court three where junior Kelly Perry and freshman Jessie Rochefort were defeated, 8-4.
Later in the afternoon in singles play junior Dianne Hollands took on Stanford's Amber Liu. Hollands forced the first set into a tiebreak before losing in two sets, 7-6(5), 6-2. Junior Maja Mlakar also played in a tiebreak to decide the first set. She eventually fell to Stanford's Alice Barnes, 7-6(2), 6-2. The only Wildcat to win a set was junior Kelly Perry. Perry played in the fourth position and won her first set 6-3. Her opponent, Lauren Barnikow, came back to win the second set and eventually the match. Senior Debbie Larocque, freshman Jessie Rochefort, and sophomore Iza Ferreira all lost their matches in two sets.
The Wildcats will next compete tomorrow at 1:30 p.m. as they take on the No. 11 California Golden Bears in Berkeley, Calif.
