LOS ANGELES ?- The No. 8 Arizona women’s gymnastics team dropped its Pac-10 opener at No. 7 UCLA, 196.750-193.075, on Sunday afternoon at Pauley Pavilion. Bruin gymnasts claimed the top two spots in all four events in addition to the top two all-around scores.

"It was very uncharacteristic for us to come out and perform the way we did," head coach Bill Ryden said following the meet. "There are no excuses; we just weren't ourselves today."

The Bruins came out sharp and took control of the meet early, en route to their season high team score of 196.750. In addition, UCLA established new season highs on bars (49.350), beam (49.200) and floor (49.350). Tasha Schwikert won the all-around with a total of 39.700, and claimed at least a share of the vault (9.900), beam (9.950) and floor titles (9.950).

The Wildcats began the meet on the uneven parallel bars and had to count two falls, while recording a team score of 47.200. Senior Aubrey Kelly was one of the bright spots for Arizona, earning a fourth-place mark of 9.825. Karin Wurm and Suzanne Alvey added scores of 9.750 and 9.650, respectively.

Arizona moved to vault to begin the second rotation and bounced back with a solid rotation, totaling a 48.875. Rachelle Silberg and Brittney Morgan led the Wildcats in the event, each sharing third place with a 9.825. Wurm added a tally of 9.800.

In the third rotation, the Wildcats scored a 48.550 on the floor exercise. Jamie Holton paced Arizona with a 9.800. Danielle Hicks earned a 9.750, while freshman Miranda Russell chipped in a 9.725.

Arizona closed the meet on the balance beam, recording a 48.450. Leading the way for the Wildcats were Kelly and Hicks, who claimed the third and fourth-place spots in the event, with scores of 9.850 and 9.825, respectively. Holton and Morgan each turned in solid beam sets, each earning a 9.725.

Arizona was without Alexis Greene, a regular in the Wildcats’ bars and floor lineups. The 5-5 sophomore from Severn, Md., ruptured her Achilles tendon in practice earlier in the week and will likely miss the remainder of the season.

With the absence of Greene, three Wildcats competed in all four events. For the second straight meet, Kelly totaled a 39.000 to take third place overall. Wurm (38.375) and Morgan (37.425) were the other Wildcats to compete in the all-around.

"We put the pressure to perform on a lot of new people and just didn't get the results we wanted," Ryden said. "I guess this is one of those growing pains experiences. We have to get some of our younger gymnasts more experience and we need to get results from them."

The Wildcats will return to Tucson for its home opener on Friday, Jan. 26. Arizona will welcome the Oregon State Beavers to McKale Center. The Pac-10 dual meet is set to begin at 7:30 p.m. (MST).
