ALBUQUERQUE, N.M.-Powered by the performance of junior Ricky Barnes, Arizona's men's golf team moved up three spots to fourth place after round two of the NCAA West Regional Friday at the University of New Mexico's Championship Course. The Wildcats carded a second-round score of 293 (+5) to move into a fourth-place tie with San Diego State at nine-over-par for the tournament.
Barnes, a junior from Stockton, Calif., notched a second-round 67 (-5) to match his season-best round and take over first place. He stands at seven-under-par, five strokes ahead of second-place. Jonathon Echols of Fresno State, Jason Hartwick of Texas, Justin Smith of Minnesota and Mark Warman of San Diego State share second place at 2-under 142.
Nevada-Las Vegas owns the tournament team lead as it shot a second round 292 to stand at 582 (+6) after two rounds. Fresno State sits in second, while Washington is third.
Sophomore Chris Nallen posted his second straight round of 2-over 74 to put himself at 148 (+4) for the tournament, good for a tie for 36th. Arizona's lone competing freshman, Kipp Riehle, sits tied for 74th after a second-round 76 brought him to 7-over-par for the tournament.
The final two members of the Arizona lineup, Andy Connell and Reid Hatley, are tied for 82nd and 87th places, respectively. Connell notched another round of 4-over 76 to stand at 8-over-par after 36 holes. Hatley posted a second-round 80 and is at 9-over-par for the tournament.
The tournament concludes Saturday at the UNM Championship Course, Arizona's tee times start at 7:20 a.m. MDT. The top ten teams and two individuals in each of the three regional sites advance to the NCAA Championships in Columbus, Ohio, on May 29-June 1. Arizona has won the NCAA Regional five times in its history (1989, '91, '92, '93 and 2000).
