6-foot-4 senior is the program’s 27th draft choice since 1989

TUCSON, Ariz. ?- University of Arizona men’s basketball player Hassan Adams was selected in the 2006 NBA Draft, held Wednesday at The Theater at Madison Square Garden in New York City.

Adams, a 6-foot-4, 220-pound guard from Los Angeles, Calif., was selected with the 24th pick of the second round (54th overall) by the New Jersey Nets.  He averaged a team-leading 17.5 points, to go with 5.0 rebounds and 2.9 assists per game in 31 appearances (30 starts) this season.  He shot 47.8 percent (234-of-490) from the field and led the Pac-10 Conference with a 2.6 steals per game average.  Adams has finished in double figures 26 times in 2005-06, including 14 games with 20 or more points.  He was named co-Most Valuable Player by vote of his teammates.

"I'm surprised that he went that low," said Arizona head coach Lute Olson.  "I firmly believe that Hassan will make a career of the NBA.  Being drafted by New Jersey is a good fit for him.  He'll fit in beautifully with their system, playing alongside Richard (Jefferson) and Jason Kidd.  New Jersey did very well in the draft."

Adams, who was a first team all-Pac-10 and USBWA all-District IX selection, is the only player in Pac-10 history to record 1,800 points, 700 rebounds and 200 steals in a career.  He closed his Arizona career ranked in the top 10 of eight statistical categories (1,818 points/7th; 750 FG/3rd; 1,503 FGA/3rd; 238 steals/2nd; 85 blocks/8th; 130 games played/T5th; 100 starts/10th; 3,609 minutes played/8th).

Arizona leads the nation in overall draft picks with 27 since 1989, the year the NBA Draft was shortened to two rounds.  Adams is the 58th Arizona product to be selected in the NBA Draft since 1948.

In his 33-year collegiate coaching career, Lute Olson has now produced 52 NBA Draft picks, including 31 at Arizona.
