Three Wildcats finish in the top-five places to secure two-stroke win

TUCSON, Ariz. ?- Bolstered by three players in the top-five places, the University of Arizona men’s golf junior varsity team won the Elco, Inc. CSUB Fall Invitational by two strokes Tuesday in Bakersfield, Calif.

The Wildcat junior varsity shot a final-round 291 (+3) en route to a three-round total of 859 (-5) to hold on to just enough of its second-round lead to claim victory.  Arizona began the day with a five-stroke lead over tournament-host and runner-up Cal State-Bakersfield.  The Wildcats and Roadrunners were the only teams in the field of 15 to finish the 54-hole event under par.

It marks the Arizona junior varsity’s third tournament victory since the start of the 2002-03 season.  Incidentally, all of those wins have come in the team’s first tournament of the season.

Sophomore Trey Denton led the way for the Wildcats, as he finished in a tie for second place with a three-round total of 213 (-3).  Denton fired rounds of 69, 71 and 73 to collect the fourth top-10 finish of his collegiate career.  He finished two strokes behind the University of British Columbia’s David Stewart, who shot a two-under 70 Tuesday to finish at 211 (-5).

Sophomore Billy Whalen and freshman Nicholas Park, who each tied for fifth place, also played well for the Arizona JV.  After redshirting last season, Whalen opened the 2005-06 campaign with his first career top-10 finish.  He carded rounds of 74, 73 and a career-best 67 to finish at two-under 214, which was his low tournament total as well.  It was his first tournament action since April 2004.  Park, a native of Ithaca, N.Y., posted a top-five effort in his collegiate debut with a 214 (-2) total, which included rounds of 69, 72 and 73.

Also competing for the Wildcats were freshman Ben Fox, who tied for 11th place with a two-over 218 total and junior Brett Carter, who tied for 62nd place with a 235 (+19) total.

The 54-hole Elco, Inc. CSUB Fall Invitational was contested at Bakersfield Country Club, a par 72, 6,819-yard layout.
