TUCSON, Ariz. - The Arizona men's golf team earned its first victory of the season Tuesday with a 20 stroke dominance in the Braveheart Classic. In addition, junior Tarquin MacManus used a third round 66 (-6) to take home the individual medal.

Five Arizona golfers finished in the top 16, including three in the top five. MacManus and Rich Saferian were two of only three golfers to finish the tournament under par. Saferian finished third at two under. Jonathan Khan shot even for the tournament, tying for fourth place, his highest finish of the year. Philip Bagdade also earned his top finish of the year; he finished 14th at four over. Brad Nicholson, who had never recorded a top-20 finish in his fourteen events played as a Wildcat, tied for 16th.

The win was Arizona's first since Oct. 9, 2007. The two year drought was Arizona's longest since not winning a tournament in 1998 or '99. The 20 stroke separation is the largest margin of victory for UA since Feb. 21, 1992, when the Cats won the John Burns Intercollegiate by 21 strokes.

This marks the second time in three events that a Wildcat has claimed the individual medal. Saferian won Arizona Invitational Feb. 2. This win was MacManus' second of his career; he won the 2009 Southeast Regional.

Arizona led the entire tournament, culminating in an 858 (-6) cumulative score. Long Beach State, CSU-Northridge, Santa Clara and Loyola Marymount rounded out the top-five.

Joining MacManus, Saferian and Khan in the top five were Jake Sarnoff of Loyola Marymount and Scott Travers of Santa Clara. Sarnoff finished second while Travers tied for fourth.

In addition to Arizona's five golfers in the top-16, John Kostis struggled in his return from a back injury that has kept him out of Arizona's first two spring tournaments, finishing 46th. However he did finish on a high-note; the junior carded a final round 70 (-2), one of only six golfers to shoot 70 or better in the last round. MacManus, Saferian and Khan also joined Kostis in that group of six.

The Braveheart Classic was contested at the Oak Valley Golf Club in Beaumont, Calif., a par 72, 7,003 yard course.

Up Next: The Cats will head to Sin City for the Southern Highlands Championship March 12-14.
