CORVALLIS, Ore. - Arizona opened its defense of the Pac-10 Women's Golf Championship Thursday with a first-round 299 (+11), good for fourth place with 36 holes remaining. Freshman Erica Blasberg carded the best individual round for the Wildcats as she shot even-par 72 to position herself in fifth place after day one.
California assumed the first-round lead at Trysting Tree Golf Club after it shot a team total of 4-over-par 292. The Golden Bears lead second-place Southern California by two strokes heading into Friday's second round. UCLA stands in third place at 10-over-par 298, one shot ahead of Arizona. Individually, Sarah Huarte of California and Mikaela Parmlid of Southern California share the lead at 2-under-par 70.
The Wildcat women's golf team has won the conference tournament in each of the last three years and in five of the last six. A win at the Pac-10 tournament would be the seventh conference championship in school history, a feat unmatched by any other Pac-10 institution.
Blasberg, in her first appearance at the conference championship, made an impressive debut as she rallied to shoot 2-under par on the final eight holes, closing the day at even par.
Joining her in the top 15 are Wildcat seniors Laura Myerscough and Anne Lee. The duo is tied for 14th place after each shot an opening-round 75 (+3). The pair of veterans sit just five strokes off the lead with two rounds remaining in the tournament.
Freshman Cassandra Kirkland, also making her Pac-10 tournament debut, posted the fourth counting score for Arizona Thursday. The native of Saint-Nom-La-Breteche, France, fired a round of 5-over-par 77 to stand tied for 24th place. Rounding out the Wildcat lineup is sophomore Miriam Kraschinski, who carded a 6-over 78 and is tied for 34th place. Freshman Whitney Welch, competing as an individual, matched Kirkland's score and is tied for 24th at 5-over-par 77.
The tournament's second round gets underway Friday with tee times beginning at 8:30 a.m. at Trysting Tree Golf Club.
