ANN ARBOR, Mich. ?- The Arizona men’s tennis team completed first-day play at the 2004 ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships, in Ann Arbor, Mich. Arizona sent two competitors, senior Colin O’Grady and junior Roger Matalonga.
Matalonga was the only Wildcat competitor to compete in singles action for the day as he went up against Ryler DeHeart of the University of Illinois. After a good start from Matalonga, DeHeart came back to defeat Matalonga, 1-6, 6-2, 6-4.
Later on in the afternoon, Matalonga paired up with O’Grady to face Deheart and his partner, GD Jones, of Illinois to start off doubles competition. In a well-fought match that took extra points, Matalonga and O’Grady fell to the pair from Illinois 9-7.
The two Wildcats continue action tomorrow as Matalonga is set to face off against Jakub Praibis of the University of Indiana. Also in doubles, Matalonga and O’Grady will face off against David Kowalski and Ryan Stotland of the University of New Mexico tomorrow afternoon. In action down South, the rest of the Wildcat team will compete in their final tournament of the fall, the Aggie Invitational at College Station, Texas.
