Hi from Italia!

This is Coach Joan Bonvicini, and I want to tell you about a very special day we had in Lake Garda. Instead of visiting Verona as our itinerary had on its schedule, we decided to let the players sleep in and then drive about 2 ?˝ hours for a good meal before our game outside of Venice. I mentioned to our tour guide that my Dad has relatives in the Lake Garda region and own a restaurant. It sounded like a good plan to see my family in Italy and have some great food.

My parents had been to their restaurant ?'Montefelice’ in Bardolino, and said that it was wonderful!! Our tour guides set up our reservation and I recommended some new items to try. We order food a bit different in Italy than in the States. If we were to sit down and have each player order their food and then get served, it would take approximately 3 hours! So, we order for the group and the players then are able to try new items they would not probably order for themselves.

The drive from Milan to Lake Garda was gorgeous. There are vineyards everywhere! This region of Italy is called the Veneto region and has wonderful food and wine. We found the restaurant in Bardolino which is on Lake Garda and it also has a hotel and even had a discothèque. It was the prettiest place we have visited so far! My relatives, the Moran do family, own the property. They are related to me on my grandmother’s side. Her maiden name is Morando and this was her nephew.

Gianni Morando, his wife and mother were very gracious and we had lunch on the patio with a wonderful view of the lake. Our menu consisted of a few courses: 1st course-polenta with some fish; 2nd course-cold cuts; 3rd course-tortellini alla panna and risotto; 4th course-turkey and roasted potatoes or fresh fish. We are not lacking for food! It was by far the best meal we have had! To have this wonderful opportunity to travel with our University of Arizona team and to share this experience in seeing my relatives was priceless!

I hope you all have an opportunity to visit Italy some time! The people here truly love Americans and their hospitality is unmatched. I know I am a bit biased, but I am very proud of my Italian heritage!
