WALNUT CREEK, Calif. (Dec. 23)-- University of Arizona freshman center Shawntinice Polk has been named the Pac-10 Women's Basketball Player of the Week for Dec. 16-22, Commissioner Tom Hansen announced today.
Polk, from Hanford, Calif., averaged 21.5 points, 14.5 rebounds, 4.0 blocks and 3.0 assists in the Wildcats' two wins over No. 25 New Mexico and UNLV. For the week, Polk shot 65.5 percent (19-of-29) from the field, including a 70.0 percent clip (7-of-10) against the Lady Rebels. In the 101-73 win over UNLV, Polk scored 17 points, 13 of which came in the second half, and notched season-highs in rebounding (18) and blocked shots (6).
Against New Mexico, currently ranked 25th in the USA Today/ESPN/WBCA top-25 poll, Polk scored a game-high 26 points and grabbed 11 rebounds to halt a Wildcat two-game losing skid against the Lobos. Polk was 12-of-19 from the field (.632) and added three assists, two blocks and a steal to secure the 70-61 Arizona win.
Finishing up the non-conference season with a 6-2 mark, the Wildcats take to the road to face Conference opponents, California (Dec. 27) and Stanford (Dec. 29).
The Player of the Week honor is the second of Polk's career and the 26th all-time selection for Arizona. Wither her previous player of the week selection earlier this season, Polk became the first freshman to garner Pac-10 Player of the Week honors since Stanford's Nicole Powell in 2000-01, and the first Wildcat freshman to receive such distinction since Lisa Griffith in 1996-97.
