Next Up for the Cats

The No. 2 Arizona softball team (31-3) will host Oregon and Oregon State from March 28-March 30 in its Pac-10 opener. The Cats will play No. 20 Oregon State on Friday, March 28 at 7 p.m. Arizona will play No. 19 Oregon on Saturday, March 29 at 7 p.m. The Wildcats are scheduled to play Oregon again on Sunday, March 30 at 1 p.m.

Cal State Fullerton

The Wildcats hosted No. 9 Cal State Fullerton last weekend in a doubleheader. In the first game of the doubleheader, Arizona won by a score of 5-2. In the second game, the Cats fell to the Titans, 15-3. The loss snapped Arizona's 17-game winning streak.

Going, Going, Gone

In 34 games, the Cats have hit 50 home runs. Senior Lovie Jung leads the team with 17 home runs. Jung also has four grand slams. Junior Mackenzie Vandergeest and sophomore Jackie Coburn are both tied with nine home runs. Vandergeest has also hit three grand slams. As a team, the Cats have hit eight grand slams.

 
 

Gotta Love It

Senior Lovie Jung leads the team in a number of categories, including runs (37), doubles (15), triples (2), home runs (17), RBIs (52) and slugging percentage (1.143). Jung is tied for No. 10 on the UA record chart for doubles in a season. Jung also moved to No. 14 on the UA chart for home runs in a season.

Pac-10 Player of the Week

Freshman Alicia Hollowell was named Pac-10 pitcher of the Week for March 10-March 16. Hollowell had a 2-0 record during the KIA Klassic with two shutouts. She pitched 15 innings and struck out 32 batters. It was the first Pac-10 award for Hollowell and the second for the Cats. Lovie Jung was named Pac-10 Player of the Week for February 3-9.

In the Circle

Alicia Hollowell had a 1-0 record against No. 9 Cal State Fullerton last weekend. Hollowell pitched seven innings and struck out nine batters. She had a 2.00 ERA. Hollowell gave up eight hits, the most of her career. On the season, Hollowell has a, 18-2 record with a 0.33 ERA. She has pitched 129 innings and has struck out 199 batters. Hollowell has had two no-hitters, one against Wisconsin on Feb. 8 and the other against Minnesota on Feb. 15.

The Rankings

Arizona is ranked No. 2 in the latest USA Today/NFCA Top 25 poll. The Cats are also ranked No. 1 in the latest ESPN.com/USA Softball Top 25 poll. The ESPN.com poll began on Feb. 25 and is voted on by NCAA Division I coaches and by selected media members. The ESPN.com poll comes out again on Tuesday, March 24, and the USA Today poll comes out on Wednesday, March 26. Oregon is No. 19 in the USA Today/NFCA poll and Oregon State is ranked No. 20. In the ESPN.com poll, Oregon is ranked No. 20 and Oregon State is No. 19.

The Coach

Arizona's Mike Candrea carries a career record of 957-187 (.837), accomplished in 17 years with the Wildcats. The 2002 Pac-10 co-Coach of the Year has led UA to six national titles and six Pacific-10 Conference championships. Last season, he became only the third Division I coach in history to win 900 games. He's on his way to become only the second coach to win 1,000 games. During his tenure, Wildcat student-athletes have won the Honda Softball Award fives times (Susie Parra-1994, Jenny Dalton-1996, Nancy Evans-1998, Jennie Finch-2001, 2002). Candrea's Arizona teams have played in 16 consecutive NCAA Tournaments and 15 consecutive College World Series. Last season, Candrea's team made it to the College World Series Championship game before losing to California, 6-0. Candrea is joined by assistant coaches Nancy Evans and Larry Ray.

Hillenbrand Stadium

UA carries a record of 322-20 in Hillenbrand Stadium. Arizona had a total crowd of 2,560 for the Hillenbrand Invitational. The Cats had an average attendance of 1,755 and drew in a total of 49,140 in 2002. Arizona set an attendance record of 3,161 fans on April 9, 2002 against UCLA. Arizona had a three-season 70-game home winning streak snapped by UCLA on April 7, 2002.
