IRVINE, Calif. -- The University of Arizona men's tennis player David Humphreys was the lone Wildcat to compete on the third day of the ITA West Regional Championships on the UC Irvine campus. After doubles play was delayed for the third straight day due to light showers, the redshirt junior took to the court and faced Jenson Turner of Pepperdine in the fourth round of the singles consolation bracket. Humphreys fell in straight sets, 6-1, 6-0.
Arizona's other singles player Jay Goldman pulled out from competition after advancing to the fourth round of the consolation bracket.
"We had some mixed results this weekend, but I am pleased at the level most of our guys are playing," said head coach Tad Berkowitz. "Our main focus though at practice will be our doubles as that is the area we need to improve upon."
The Wildcats wrapped up the highly competitive tournament in Irvine, Calif. hosted by UC Irvine with seniors Andres Carrasco, Borja Malo and junior Jason Zafiros all advancing to the round of 32 before being eliminated.
Humphreys and Goldman each bounced back after falling in the main draw to win their matches in their consolation bracket to advance to the fourth round. Senior Geoff Embry, redshirt sophomore Tom Wolff and freshman Mario Urquidi all advanced to the round of 64.
The team will now focus on next weekend's competition where they will travel to Las Vegas, Nev. to compete in the UNLV Invitational. Last season, Embry won the second flight of singles competition after having a stellar three day performance. Carrasco also represented the Wildcats well advancing to the third round of singles competition before being eliminated in three close sets.
