AUSTIN – University of Arizona diver Ben Grado will compete this weekend in the 2009 NCAA Zone E Diving Regionals in Austin, Texas. The competition, which serves as a qualifying competition for the NCAA Championships, will take place at the Lee and Joe Jamail Texas Swim Center, on the campus of the University of Texas.
Zone E consists of 35 schools from 11 states in the West Region--Arizona, California, Colorado, Hawaii, Idaho, Nevada, New Mexico, Oregon, Utah, Washington and Wyoming.
Competition at the Zone E meet begins Thursday with the men's 1-meter and women's 3-meter springboard events. Friday's action will include the men's 3-meter and women's 1-meter events, while the regional concludes Saturday with the platform diving events.
Six men and seven women from Zone E will receive bids to the NCAA Championships, which are being held in College Station, Texas, March 19-21 (women) and March 26-28 (men). NCAA Championship qualifiers will be announced at the conclusion of Saturday's events.
Grado, a sophomore from Conifer, Colo., will represent the Wildcats who will look to defend its NCAA title from last season. At the Pac-10 Championships, Grado placed runner-up in the platform competition, was fourth in the three-meter event and fifth in the one-meter.
