UA tennis upsets No. 45 San Diego

TUCSON--The Arizona women's tennis team upset the No. 45 University of San Diego 6-1 on Saturday at the LaNelle Robson Tennis Center.

Arizona (5-0, 0-0 Pac-10) took the doubles point with wins on the No. 1 and 2 courts. On court 1, sophomore Natasha Marks and freshman Alexandrina Naydenova defeated Juliette Coupez and Alexandra Demidova 9-8, and senior Claire Rietsch and sophomore Sarah Landsman defeated Laura Claus and Maja Sujica 8-1.

San Diego (3-2, 0-0 WCC) won in the No. 3 spot, with senior Ariane Masschelein and junior Jane Huh falling to Justine Perl and Marite Raygada 8-6.

In singles, Masschelein finished first on court 2 with a 6-3, 6-0 win over Claus on, and Rietsch followed shortly after with a 6-2, 6-1 win over Demidova on court five.

Naydenova's 6-3, 6-0 win over Lise Marbach on court 4 clinched the win for the Wildcats.

On court one, Marks started strong against Coupez with a 6-2 win in set one, and followed with a 6-4 win in set two after suffering an minor strain to her ankle.

Next to finish was Landsman on court 3, with a 6-3, 6-1 win over Sujica. The Wildcats suffered one loss on court six with Castany falling to Raygada 4-6, 3-6.

"I'm so proud of the way our team played today." Said head coach Vicky Maes, "They came out with fire and, after a tough doubles win, did not look back. These girls are making progress every day and this is a great confidence boost going into our first road trip."

Up next, the Wildcats hit the road to take on Rice on Friday, February 12 at noon, and Texas Tech on Saturday, February 13 at 11 am.
