TUCSON - The Panthers took advantage of four errors by the Bulldogs to give Northern Iowa a 7-5 victory and keep Drake winless, in both teams' final game of Arizona's Worth Wildcat Invitational softball tournament Sunday.
Both teams opened the first with a triple to centerfield to score runs. Lindsay Wood hit one in the gap in right center then scored on Stacey Sampson's sacrifice fly for Northern Iowa. Then in the bottom of the inning, Drake's Brooke Buchanan hit one in the gape in left center and scored on Kara DeShaw's single up the middle.
Michele Markham hit a two-out two-run single in the bottom of the fourth to give Drake a 3-1 lead. But the Bulldogs committed four errors in the top of the fifth to let UNI score five runs, three of them unearned, on two hits and a walk, to regain the lead at 6-3.
Drake picked up two runs in the on an RBI single by DeShaw and an error by the left fielder on the same play, and UNI scored a run in the top of the sixth on four successive hits capped by Angela Higgins RBI single to make it 7-5.
UNI improved to 9-2 overall and 4-1 in tournament play. Drake is 0-10.
