TUCSONFreshmen Kieren Thompson and Andre Vidaller will begin their Arizona men’s tennis collegiate careers this weekend in La Quinta, Calif. at the prestigious National Collegiate Tennis Classic, known as “The Wimbledon of College Tennis.” Play begins Friday and continues through Sunday at La Quinta Resort & Club.


“This event is a great opportunity to get two of our guys valuable experience prior to the start of our dual match season,” said head coach Tad Berkowitz.


Thompson and Vidaller are two of the four freshmen who arrived after the fall season. Vidaller is a 5-foot-9 native of Santos, Brazil and Thompson is a 5-foot-11 freshman from Brisbane, Australia.


The two Wildcats will compete against nine other schools: University of Kentucky, University of Georgia, Pepperdine University, University of North Carolina, and Pac-10 foes USC and UCLA. Players from Texas Tech, Boise State, UCI will also be competing.


Along with singles action the two will pair up for the first time in doubles action.  The classic will begin on Friday at 8 a.m. PST. with the singles primary draw followed by the second round and consolation rounds of singles at 11 a.m. Doubles will begin at 3 p.m. PST.
