BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The University of Arizona men's golf team posted its best two rounds of the season Monday and stands in a tie for second place at the Jerry Pate National Intercollegiate.

Bolstered by four golfers in the top-25 places, Arizona carded a 566 (-2) total after 36 holes and is tied for second place in the 12-team field. The Wildcats opened the day with first-round 281 (-3), its lowest single round of the year and followed it up with a 285 (+1) in the second round for the 566 total. UA's 36-hole total is a season low to date. The Cats, tied for second place with Oklahoma State, trial tournament-leader Wake Forest by 11 strokes heading into Tuesday's final round.

Leading the way for Arizona once again was sophomore Chris Nallen. The Blairstown, N.J., native shot a two-round total of 140 (-2) and is tied for 10th place. Included in the effort was an opening round 68. Teammate Tim Weiss, making his first appearance with the UA varsity since 1999, responded with a two-round total of 141 (-1) and is tied for 15th place, five strokes behind Wake Forest's Bill Lee, who leads the event with a 136 (-6) total.

Also playing well for the Wildcats was juniors Ricky Barnes and Reid Hatley. Barnes carded a 142 (E) through 36 holes Monday and is tied for 18th place, while Hatley currently stands tied for 23rd place at 143 (+1). Freshman Kipp Riehle rounded out the UA lineup with a 154 (+12) and is tied for 51st place.

The 54-hole Jerry Pate National Intercollegiate is being held at the Old Overton Club, a par 71, 6,958-yard layout. The event is hosted by the University of Alabama and concludes with 18 holes on Tuesday.
