Cats Continue Pacific 10 Conference Play By Hosting No. 23 Washington and Oregon

The Rankings: ?This week the Cats are No. 65 in the ITA collegiate rankings. Individually Claudio Christen is listed at No. 74 after beating Stanfordˇ?s Alex Clayton. Also Despite not playing last weekend, the duo of Jay Goldman and Claudio Christen moved up to No. 51 in terms of doubles

Arizona Head Coach Tad Berkowitzˇ? will begin his third season at the helm for the Wildcats . He currently has a record of 27-33.? Berkowitz joined the program in 2004?and has held numerous national and collegiate coaching positions. He was promoted to the head coaching position in the spring of 2005 after serving as hall-of-famer Bill Wright's assistant.? Berkowitz, 33, was a top collegiate player for the universities of Kentucky and New Mexico, respectively.? Berkowitz began his coaching career in 1999?as an assistant coach at Alabama for three seasons. In his final year he helped the Crimson Tide earn a No. 18 national ranking and a berth in the NCAA Championships.? He is assisted by Tom Lloyd, who is in his second year in that capacity.

Scouting the Huskies: ?Washington is currently ranked 23rd overall. They have impressive wins over Alabama and Pepperdine. Last time out they lost to both USC and UCLA.

The Series vs. Washington: ?The Huskies lead the all-time series between the two schools at 10-11.? Last year Washington beat Arizona 6-1 in Seattle.

Scouting the Ducks: ?Oregon is not ranked in this weekˇ?s collegiate poll. They enter Sundayˇ?s match with a record of 11-9. Last time on the courts the lost to USCand UCLA both by a score of 6-1.

The Series vs. Oregon: ?Arizona currently leads the all-time series vs. the Ducks at 10-3. Last year the Ducks beat the Cats 5-2 in Eugene, Ore.

Last Time Out: ?Arizona lost both of its road matches last weekend up in the Bay Area by the score of 5-2.? The Cats were playing without Freshman Jay Goldman who did not make the trip.

Claudiooooo: ?Claudio Christen came up big in his match vs. Stanford on Saturday. The senior was matched up against No. 2 ranked Alex Clayton and took down the highly touted player; 7-6, 1-6, 6-3.? Playing in the No. 1 spot, Christen knows he will always be facing the toughest opponents every week, but he relishes the opportunity and thrives on the pressure.? This week he was ranked No. 74 in singles by the ITA.

Some New (Volunteer) Coaching Help: ?This year Arizona is pleased to have ATP all-pro Taylor Dent as a volunteer assistant coach throughout the season.? Dent, who was ranked as the No. 21 player in the world on August 8th 2005, suffered a back injury which caused him to miss most of the past seasons. After having successful surgery, Dent was contacted by good friend and former coach Tom Lloyd, now an assistant with Arizona, who extended the coaching invitation.? Dent, while working on rehabbing his back, will coach the Wildcats on specific and individual techniques. Dent is known as an aggressive serve-and-volleyer with one of the biggest serves on the tour, tying Andy Roddick for the record of fastest serve at 155 mph.

Returnees: ?The Cats senior leaders have been the rock of the team so far. Claudio Christen, ranked No. 121 in singles and No. 48 in doubles by the ITA rankings released on Tuesday, has a record of 11-3 in doubles. Bruno Alcala has a record of 11-3 in singles.??

New Faces in the Crowd: ?Half way into the year, Arizonaˇ?s so-called ˇ?newbiesˇ± have played a significant role to the teamˇ?s success.? Freshman Andres Carrasco has fluctuated between the No. 2 and 3 positions while posting a record of 11-5 in singles. Also their newcomer from down under, sophomore Pat Metham, has a record of 10-4.

Fall Season: ?The Cats participated in five fall tournaments during the fall semester...In the Midland Racquet Club Collegiate Invitational, Claudio Christen and Bruno Alcala were able to win the doubles championshipˇ?At the Aggie Fall Invitational in Las Cruces, New Mexico, Ravid Hazi advanced to the finals before falling to champion Jim Brouleau of New Mexico Stateˇ?Christen competed in the prestigious Polo All American Championship in Tulsa, OK and won four matches before finally falling to No. 17 Adam Holmstrom of Denverˇ?Peter Zimmer competed in three fall events and posted a record of 5-3.

Up Next: ?The Cats will again be at home, this time vs. the Los Angeles schools.? On Friday they will go up against the Bruins from UCLA and Saturday the USC Trojans. Arizonaˇ?s last scheduled match vs. UCLA was rained out in Los Angeles.
