TUCSON, Ariz. ?- The second-ranked Arizona softball team will hit the road to face No. 11 Louisiana-Lafayette in a three-game series at the Ragin’ Cajuns Park beginning Friday, March 25 at 5 p.m. MST.
The last time the Cats and the Cajuns met, Louisiana-Lafayette ended Arizona’s record-setting 2004 season with a 5-0 shutout win behind the arm of pitcher Brooke Mitchell. The Cajuns’ win over the Wildcats marked the first time Arizona was shut out last season and the first time in 16 years the Cats failed to qualify for the NCAA Women’s College World Series.
Heading into this weekend’s series, sophomore Caitlin Lowe leads the Cats offensively with a .516 batting average. She’s also the speediest on the bases to date with 19 steals in 21 tries. Sophomore shortstop Kristie Fox is second behind Lowe in batting average (.440), but leads Arizona with 40 RBI, 65 total bases and seven homers. On the season, Arizona is hitting .329 while the Cats’ pitcher have held opponents to an average of .114.
On the mound, junior pitcher Alicia Hollowell will face the Ragin’ Cajuns armed with a 0.37 ERA, a 15-1 record (her only loss to No. 5 Texas and Cat Osterman) and 220 season strikeouts. Her career total tops Arizona’s record list at 1,122. Freshman pitcher Taryne Mowatt also takes a solid r?©sum?© to Lafayette, with an ERA of 0.86, a 7-1 record (her only loss to now top-ranked Michigan) and 67 Ks. Hollowell and Mowatt have allowed just six earned runs apiece this season.
After Friday’s 5 p.m. game with the Cajuns, the Wildcats will play again Saturday at 5 p.m. MST and Sunday at 10 a.m. MST.
