Volleyball Ranked No. 10 In AVCA Preseason Poll

TUCSON, Ariz.- The American Volleyball Coaches Association and USA Today announced its preseason top 25 on Monday and the Arizona volleyball team will start off the season as the No. 10-ranked team in the country. The Wildcats tallied 978 votes in the first poll of the season, 70 points behind No. 9 UC Santa Barbara.

Defending national champion USC enters the year as the preseason favorite to repeat for the title. The Women of Troy garnered 1,624 points, including 64 of the 65 first-place votes. Hawaii, which lost to Stanford in the Final Four last season, is ranked second followed by Florida, Stanford and Pepperdine. Minnesota (No. 6), Nebraska (No. 7) and Northern Iowa (No. 8) finish out the top 10.

Arizona, which finished the 2002 season 20-12 overall and ranked No. 10 in the final poll, is set to open the 2003 schedule on August 29, in Malibu, Calif., against Notre Dame.

- Arizona's preseason ranking extends its streak of consecutive polls in the top 25 to 79 straight.

- Arizona will face nine teams ranked in the preseason top 25, including four of the top 5 teams.

- Arizona will also take on five teams that placed outside of the top 25, but still received votes.

- The Pac-10 has five teams ranked among the top 25 in the preseason and two receiving votes.
