Junior Aubree Cristello and senior Katie Matusik are en route to Duluth, Ga. to participate in the NCAA National Championships. Both gymnasts are scheduled to compete in the first session at 12 p.m., rotating with No. 7 Utah. This means that Cristello will begin the meet on floor and vault, rotate through a bye, and then compete bars and beam, ending on a bye. Matusik will join in the beam rotation with Cristello.
Cristello is heading into the NCAA Championships a seasoned all-around veteran, with two scores of 39.475 under her belt from this season alone. Currently averaging a 39.119, Cristello should be able to hold her own against the very best all-around competitors - especially on the floor. If Cristello competes as consistently as she has been able to this season, she will be a major contender on the event that she has earned six scores of 9.90 or better and 12 scores of 9.800 throughout the year.
That being said, Cristello is excited to go out and compete with some of the best teams in the nation, and spread the Arizona name with her performances:
Bolstering five scores of five scores of 9.90 on beam, Matusik will be a force to be reckoned with on the four-inch wide event. According to coaches, Matusik doesn't just go through the motions on beam - she performs, which is evident in her success in both the rankings and her overall average score of 9.798.
For Matusik, this meet means a happy ending to a successful career, and an opportunity to have fun with her performances:
No live link for video footage is currently available; however scores will be posted live the day of the meet.
Depending on their performances in the first session, the girls will be competing for a chance at an All-American title and the opportunity to compete in the event finals.
