TUCSON - The No. 32 University of Arizona dominated in their season opener today 7-0 sweeping UC Riverside in all sixth singles matches at the LaNelle Robson Tennis Center. The Wildcats battled the Highlanders in doubles, splitting the first two matches, before the duo of freshman Kieren Thompson and senior Andres Carrasco clinched the point in a tiebreaker.

"I thought we had the first match jitters during doubles, but when the guys settled down they took care of business and did a great job in singles," said head coach Tad Berkowitz.

In doubles action on court three, sophomore Frank Chen made his Wildcat dual match debut with senior Borja Malo. The two squared off against UCR's (0-4, 0-0 Big West) Austin Andres and Raineir Matias. The Wildcat duo battled back and forth before Andres and Matias took the lead at 6-5 and powered their way to an 8-5 win.

The Wildcats (1-0, 0-0 Pac-10) tied the doubles point at 1-1 on court one, when junior Jason Zafiros teamed up with freshman Andre Vidaller for the first time in the number one spot. The two propelled their way to a close 9-7 victory against Michael Conroy and Quoc Doan after trading games back and forth.

Thompson and Carrasco sealed the Wildcat's double point in a tiebreaker against Kevin Griffin and Felix Macherez after trailing 4-1 to start the match. The Wildcat pair crawled their way back at 5-2 to win three straight games to tie the match at 5-5. The two teams battled, forcing a tiebreaker and once again Thompson and Carrasco bounced back after trailing 4-0 to win seven straight points to clinch the 9-8 (7-4) tiebreaker and the doubles point for the Wildcats.

In singles competition, Malo helped the Wildcats take a 2-0 lead after he cruised to a 6-1, 6-0 win against Matias on court five.

On court three, Zafiros bested Andres in straight sets, 6-2, 6-1. The junior took a 4-0 lead to start the first set before Andres secured a game at 4-1 and another at 5-2, before Zafiros clinched the first set 6-2.  In the second set, Zafiros topped Andres, 6-1, to help the Wildcats go up 3-0.

The Wildcats clinched the match on court two when senior Jay Goldman, roared through his first set against Doan, to win 6-1, and swept in his second set, 6-0.

On court six, Thompson, playing in his fourth singles match as a Wildcat, and his first singles dual match, cruised to a 6-1, 6-4, victory against the Highlander's Sean Peterson.

Carrasco, playing in the No. 1 spot for the first time, took care of business clinching both sets. In the first set, the senior took a 2-1 lead before the Highlander's Macherez scored. Carrasco went up 3-2, before cinching the next three games to win 6-2. In the second set, the Cabrils, Barcelona, Spain native blanked Macherez 6-0 to close out the set.

Vidaller, also playing in his fourth singles match as a Wildcat and first singles dual match, clinched the seventh point for the Wildcats on court four, capturing straight sets, 6-2, 6-2 against Ryan Stanbury to help the team win their season opener 7-0.

The Wildcats will travel to College Station, Texas to take on the University of Miami at the ITA National Indoor Saturday, Jan. 29 at 3 p.m.
