Arizona Head Coach Lute Olson Quotes:

“The whole key for us was obviously at the defensive end for the first 17 or so minutes. ASU was having a hard time getting the ball in position for shots.”

“We forced around 17 turnovers and 12 of those were with steals and anytime you do that you’re going to get a lot of buckets.”

“I thought we played with good alertness on defense. Ivan Radenovic was unbelievable in terms of not only the job he did covering his guy, but the anticipation he had to come up with six steals. I’m not sure you see many big guys that end up with that many.”

“Mustafa (Shakur) did a great job (covering) Kevin Kruger. We wanted Kruger to shoot twos and when he got the ball, get in his face. He was 0-9 from the three point range up until the end so Mustafa did his job well.”

Hassan Adams gave us a lot of lift with his enthusiasm. It’s getting to the point now that Shakur is stepping up and really providing leadership for the team. I though the guys off the bench really did a nice job if you look at the players who let shots happen. It’s an indication that if you share the ball, move and let the shots come, you will shoot the ball well.”

“Ivan has adjusted to the quickness of play. I think the biggest problem European players have is that the pace of (American basketball) is quicker and the athletes are quicker. But Ivan is so smart because he anticipates plays. Once we get the ball to him, he’s almost like Luke Walton because the other players will move really well because they know he will get them the ball if they are open.

“The bonding with Mustafa and Hassan is really strong, it’s obvious to see where the leadership is on the team.”

Isaiah Fox didn’t play today because his spasms are getting worse and I think they are going to give him an MRI because (this problem) has been going on since the first ASU game when he was lifting.”

“There was a great atmosphere today from the crowd. They are very supportive and really helpful. You can’t beat that student enthusiasm.”

“ASU must have had as many turnovers as shots. I have always said that this could be our best defensive team.”

“The key thing we wanted to do was make sure we were in their face when they shot they ball because both (Kevin Kruger and Bryson Krueger) can shoot the ball from the three point range well if you let them. This team is taking a lot of pride in their defense and I think that’s been showing more and more.”

“(Chris Rodgers) needs to move without the ball and let the shots come to him. We really need him in there defensively, but you have to be able to play at both ends of the court. He has been around long enough now to know how he needs to play.”

Junior F Ivan Radenovic

On ASU’s Jeff Pendergraph’s comments earlier this week:

“I really don’t care about trash talking.  The most important thing is getting the win, and we did that today.”

“We need wins.  Whether the opponent is Arizona State or Michigan State we just need wins.  At the end of the day, all we look at is the ?'W’.”

“In the second half, we wanted to come out in the first five minutes and just end the game, but we came out slow and let them back in it a bit.”

Arizona State had come in winning three of their last five games and we expected a bit more out of them today.”

“From a defensive standpoint, we knew we had to lock them up.  Each person had to lock his guy up today, and we did that.”

On his career-high six steals:

“I just tried to read ASU’s passes.  It’s not like I knew where the guys were going, but I just tried to get a hand in there.”

Sophomore G Daniel Dillon:

On the team’s defensive effort:

“We wanted to attack them and use our quickness. Chris [Rodgers] and I come in and everyone picks things up. We get easy steals and score points when we play aggressive. That gets us on a roll and makes us want to play even harder on defense.”

“We definitely wanted to rattle them early on. We wanted to create turnovers and make it hard on them to do the things they wanted to do. Everyone played hard and contributed to the win. This is the way we want to play every game.”

On coming off the bench with Rodgers to give a defensive spark:

“We feed off of each other. If he gets a steal or a deflection, it gets everyone else active. That’s what I try to do, too. A lot of players don’t know where to go when we pressure them and we get easy steals.”

Freshman F Fendi Onobun:

“It felt good to get back out and play a lot of minutes. I hadn’t been playing as much the last couple games, but I was ready today when I got my number called. I just go out and play hard, make plays and bring energy.”

“Everyone was involved today. We were all on the same page. We had a lot of confidence in what we were doing. We plaued great team defense and played hard. Everyone took care of the things they had to.”

“It was all about our defensive pressure. We played great ?'D’. Chris [Rodgers] and Hassan [Adams] got a lot of steals and so did Ivan [Radenovic]. Everyone was excited to play defense.”
