TUCSON -- No. 2-ranked Arizona (15-1) put up four runs early and cruised to a 4-1 victory over Northern Iowa (8-3) Thursday evening before a crowd of 1,045 at Hillenbrand Stadium.
Sarah Akamine (4-1) had given up only three hits before a seventh-inning home run by UNI's Courtney Dunker snapped the shutout. She struck out seven and didn't issue a single walk.
Arizona put the first run on the board in the bottom of the second. Kristen Arriola and Becca Tikey drew walks off UNI pitcher Melissa Tillett (2-2), and then Brittany Lastrapes singled to left center to plate Arriola.
K'Lee Arredondo drew a walk off reliever Jaye Hutcheson to lead off the UA third, and then scored when center fielder Megan Machovec mishandled Stacie Chambers' single. Brigette Del Ponte followed with her fifth home run of the year and third in three games to make it 4-0.
The Cats had two runners in scoring position after hits by Del Ponte and Lini Koria and a passed ball in the fifth, but Hutcheson got Baillie Kirker to line out and a ground out by Arriola to end the threat.
UA hosts a doubleheader on Sunday, playing St. John's and Idaho State. First pitch is scheduled for noon.
