PALO ALTO, Calif. - Fresh off winning the Pac-10 championship two weeks ago, #7-ranked Arizona matched its ranking with a 7-over par team score to hold a share of the lead after the opening round of the 2010 NCAA West Regional, Thursday at the Stanford Golf Course.
The Wildcats turned in a team score of 291 to sit atop the leaderboard with Virginia. The two teams sit one shot in front of both UCLA and California while Texas is two shots off the pace.
Sophomores Margarita Ramos and Nikki Koller led the way for Arizona, turning in even-par rounds of 71 as two of seven players tied for 6th place. Madeleine Ziegert of San Jose State holds the overall lead after shooting 4-under 67 while Pia Halbig of California is one shot behind at 3-under par. Three other players are tied for 3rd at 1-under par.
Junior Alejandra Llaneza is one shot behind her teammates and tied for 13th place at 1-over par after finishing the opening round with a score of 72. Freshman Sherlyn Popelka turned in the fourth scoring total for the team at 6-over 77 while sophomore Isabelle Boineau shot 79.
Arizona begins the second of three rounds on Friday, May 7 in the final groups of the day with Boineau leading the team out on the 10th tee at 1:26 p.m.
