Cats to make 19th consecutive NCAA Championship appearance

TUCSON, Ariz. ?- The University of Arizona men’s golf team tallied a four-over-par 284 Saturday and jumped into a tie for eighth place at the NCAA West Regional in Stanford, Calif., and qualified for its 19th consecutive NCAA Championship appearance.

After a horrid day Friday, which saw the team post a 16-over-par total and put its qualifying efforts in jeopardy, Arizona rebounded nicely by posting the four-over 284, and qualified safely with a three-day total of 863 (+23).

The effort tied the Wildcats for eighth place with host Stanford and earned the program its 19th consecutive championship appearance, June 1-4, in Owings Mills, Md.  The streak is the second-longest active streak in the country behind only Oklahoma State’s 59 straight appearances.

UNLV won the 27-team event by three strokes with a six-over 846 tally.  New Mexico (849), Washington (854), and UCLA and Arizona State (857) rounded out the top five places.

Once again, senior Nathan Lashley set the pace for the Wildcats, as he finished in a tie for second place after a final-round 69 (-1).  His three-under 207 total was three strokes off the pace set by Stanford’s Rob Grube, who fired a final-round 65 (-5) to claim individual medalist honors at six-under 204.

Lashley has finished in the top five in four of his last five tournaments, including three runner-up finishes.  In that span, the Scottsbluff, Neb., product carries a 70.44 stroke average.

UA sophomore Henry Liaw finished in a tie for 21st place with a four-over 214 total, while fellow sophomore Josh Esler and freshman Travis Esway finished tied for 56th place at nine-over 219 and tied for 80th place at nine-over 219, respectively.

It was the efforts of Esler and Esway that helped UA move up the leader board Saturday.  After posting a combined score of 12-over-par on Friday, the duo bounced back with a very respectable four-over tally on Saturday (72, 72) that helped keep the club in contention.

Senior Kipp Riehle finished tied for 107th place with an 18-over 228.

The 54-hole 2005 NCAA West Regional was contested at the Stanford University Golf Course, a par 70, 6,742-yard layout.

The 2005 NCAA Men’s Golf Championships will be held at Caves Valley Golf Course, a par 70, 7,124-yard layout.
