TUCSON, Ariz. - University of Arizona women's golfer Erica Blasberg advanced to the quarterfinals of the 2003 United States Women's Amateur Championship Friday with a 4 and 3 victory over Kailin Downs at Philadelphia Country Club in Gladwyne, Pa.
Blasberg, a sophomore-to-be from Corona, Calif., strung together two birdies and two pars over four consecutive holes (Nos. 5-8) to build a 4-up lead and coast to a 4 and 3 victory over Downs in the third round of match play.
The nation's top-ranked golfer according to the Golfweek/Sagarin Performance Index, Blasberg posted a 72.36 stroke average in 10 events last season. Following a tie for 21st place in her collegiate debut in early September, she posted nine consecutive top-10 finishes, including two victories. Sixteen of her 30 rounds played in 2002-03 were at par or better with a low of 68. Her three-under 210 total to win the Wildcat Invitational in February was a season low. Her efforts won her both the Pacific-10 Conference Player- and Freshman-of-the-Year honors. Blasberg tied for third at the 2003 NCAA Championships with a 10-over 298 total.
A finalist for the Honda Player of the Year award, Blasberg earned first-team All-America honors, won the 2003 Golfstat Cup and was named the 2003 NGCA Division I Softspikes Freshman of the Year.
She will face Paula Creamer or Pleasanton, Calif., in the quarterfinals today at 1:40 p.m. EDT. Philadelphia Country Club is a par 71, 6,68-yard layout.
