COSTA MESA, Calif. ?- In day two of qualifying at the Costa Mesa Futures, two Wildcats competed with hopes of reaching the tournament’s main draw.

Junior Bruno Alcala kept those hopes alive with a victory over one of the nation’s top juniors, Torrey Pines High School’s Steve Forman. Alcala continued his strong play from the previous day and won the match in straight sets 6-4, 6-3.

Claudio Christen fell out of the tournament after suffering a close loss to sixth-seeded Nima Roshan. Roshan, a former standout at Brigham Young University and a current ATP player, dropped the first set to Christen, 3-6. Christen had several chances to break serve in the second set but was unable to capitalize. Roshan won the final two sets of the match 6-3, 6-4.

“Claudio took a tough loss, but his spirits are still high,” said UA assistant coach Tom Lloyd.  “The most important thing during the fall is to just keep playing.”

Tomorrow Alcala will challenge Baylor’s number one player from last season, senior Matija Zgaga. If Alcala wins, he would need one more win to reach the tournament’s main draw.

The Costa Mesa Futures is a USTA Pro Circuit event.
