TUCSON - The University of Arizona Wildcat No. 21 men's and No. 5 women's track and field teams completed the first day of competition at the Jim Click Shootout at Roy P. Drachman Stadium. The combined events portion began on Thursday and will conclude on Friday. Arizona has two student-athletes competing in the decathlon.
To begin the day, junior Keegan Cooke clocked a time of 11.64 in the 100-meter dash, good for 723 points. In the long jump competition, he posted a mark of 22-0.75 (6.72m) and earned 748 points. That mark was good for seventh place among the 23 competitors. In the shot put competition, Cooke threw 40-8.75 (12.41m), a personal-best mark good for 631 points. Cooke cleared 6-4 (1.93m) in the high jump, tying a personal-best mark that was good for 740 points. Cooke’s personal-best time of 50.21 in the 400 meters was good for 805 points. After day one, Cooke sits in fifth place with 3,647 points.
Junior Steven Scarvelis’ time of 11.52 in the 100-meter sprint was good for 13th place and 748 points. In the long jump, Scarvelis posted a mark of 19-2.5 (5.85m), adding 554 points to his score. Scarvelis threw 43-2.25 (13.16m) in the shot put, a personal-best mark that was good for sixth place and 677 points. In the high jump competition, Scarvelis cleared 5-8.75 (1.75m) and added 585 points to his score. In the 400-meter sprint, Scarvelis clocked a time of 50.31, adding 800 points to his total. He ended day one with 3,364 points. The leader of the competition, Tomas Kirielius (Kansas State) has 3,939 points.
Competition will resume on Friday at 10 a.m. Saturday’s meet will begin at 9 a.m.
