CALIMESA, Calif. - The University of Arizona men's golf junior varsity team shot a two-round total of 586 (+10) and is in fifth place after 36 holes of the 49er Collegiate Classic.
Arizona opened the 54-hole event with an even-par 288 and followed that with a second-round 298 (+10) Thursday and ranks fifth with its 586 total. North Texas leads the 12-team field at 574 (-2), one stroke ahead of San Jose State. UC-Riverside (582) and Cal Poly (584) round out the top four places. It is the first competition of the season for the Arizona junior varsity, the only JV team in the field.
Leading the way for Arizona is junior Andy Connell. The Denver, Colo., product carded a season-low 68 in the first round en route to a 142 (-2) total. He stands in a tie for eighth place heading into Friday's final round. Sophomore Nathan Lashley also stands in the top-20, as he shot a 73-72 to rank 16th at 145 (+1). Four golfers are tied for the individual lead at 140 (-4).
Also competing for Arizona was sophomore Kipp Riehle, who is tied for 23rd place at 147 (+3), senior Brian Woolf, who is tied for 42nd at 152 (+8) and junior Nick Juszczak, who is tied for 52nd place at 156 (+12).
The 54-hole 49er Collegiate Classic is being contested at the PGA of Southern California Champions Course, a par 72, 7,091-yard layout. The event is hosted by Long Beach State University.
The Arizona varsity will next be in action on Nov. 8-10 at the Hooters Collegiate Match Play Championship in Myrtle Beach, S.C.
