ROCKY FACE, Ga. - The University of Arizona men's golf team struggled Saturday and fell into a tie for 14th place at the Carpet Capital Collegiate.
The fourth-ranked Wildcats managed just one round below par on the day in carding an eight-over 296 and stands in a tie for 14th pace after 36 holes with a 590 (+14) total. Arizona trails tournament-leader Florida by 28 strokes after the Gators posted a four-under 284 Saturday and stand at 562 (-14) through the first two rounds. Clemson (569), UNLV (572), Augusta State (575) and USC (579) round out the top five places. Eight of the 18 teams in the field posted totals at par or better on Saturday.
Individually, one Wildcat golfer stands in the top 10 after 36 holes. Junior Chris Nallen tallied an even-par 72 Saturday and is among seven golfers tied for ninth place at 142 (-2). The Blairstown, N.J. native is the only Arizona golfer within 10 shots of the lead heading into Sunday's final round. Wake Forest's Bill Haas and Georgia Tech's Troy Matteson share the lead in the field of 90 by two strokes at 136 (-8).
Also competing for the Wildcats was senior Ricky Barnes, who posted UA's only sub-par round of the day to tie for 40th place at 147 (+3), freshman Blaine Peffley, who is tied for 60th at 150 (+6), senior Reid Hatley, who is tied for 65th at 151 (+7) and junior Andy Connell, who is tied for 87th at 161 (+17).
The Carpet Capital Collegiate is being contested at the Farm Golf Club, a par 72, 6,906-yard layout. The 54-hole event runs through Sunday.
