PHOENIX, Ariz. -- The No. 2 Arizona softball team opened the Fiesta Bowl Tournament with a 6-0 win over Texas A&M (3-2) and a 6-0 win over Southwest Texas State (3-4).
The Cats jumped to an early 3-0 lead in the first inning against Texas A&M. Freshman Autumn Champion walked to reach first base, then advanced to second when sophomore Courtney Fossatti grounded out to the pitcher. Senior Lovie Jung doubled to center field and Champion scored. Junior Mackenzie Vandergeest singled to center field and Jung scored. Sophomore Jackie Coburn reached base on an error by the shortstop and Vandergeest scored.
In the second inning, senior Lisha Ribellia scored by a single to right field by Fossatti. Sophomore Crystal Farley scored in the fourth inning off of a single to right field by Jung.
Freshman Alicia Hollowell pitched the game for the Cats. Hollowell struck out a season high 15 batters. Hollowell gave up one hit and walked one batter. She improves to 4-0 on the season.
The Cats faced Southwest Texas State in the second game of the day. Arizona led 4-0 in the fourth inning with the help of a home run by Ribellia. Coburn opened the fifth inning with a home run.
Wendy Allen pitched five innings for the Cats. She struck out five batters and gave up two hits. Allen improves to 3-0. Freshman Leslie Wolfe pitched two innings. She struck out four batters and gave up zero hits.
Arizona improves to 7-0. The Cats continue action tomorrow, Feb. 8, when they face Iowa State at 11 a.m. and Wisconsin at 1:30 p.m.
