LAS VEGAS, Nev. ?- After the second round at the Las Vegas Collegiate Showdown the Arizona women’s golf team remains in second place.

“We didn’t get off to a great start today,” Head Coach Greg Allen said.  “But we came together in the end and finished strong.  I am more proud of our round today because things were going south in a hurry, but we managed to come together as a team and still finish strong.”

Cassandra Kirkland shot a +4 (76) in round two and is tied for 16th place.  Fellow senior Lani Elston-Marshall improved her round one score by one stroke finishing round two +2 (74).

Whitney Welch shot a +5 (77) in round two and is currently tied for 50th place.  Welch birdied two of her last four holes.

Freshmen Amanda Wilson and Lauren Espinosa led the Wildcats in round two shooting a -1 and -2, respectively.  Wilson remains in second place and Espinosa jumped seven spots and is now in eighth place.

“We are getting a tremendous effort from our freshmen this week,” Allen said.  “I am very pleased with the way they have stepped up so early in the year.”

Competing as an individual, Junior Rachel Gavin struggled yesterday, shooting a +10 (82).  In round two, Gavin turned it around, shooting a +1 (73) and climbing 12 spots on the leader board to 60th.

After two rounds the Cats are at even par.  Tournament leader UCLA continues to play well, they are -12 heading into the third and final round.

The women’s golf team will tee off at 8:30 a.m. tomorrow for the third and final round of the Las Vegas Collegiate Showdown.
