New Mexico Leads NIT After Two Rounds

TUCSON, Ariz.- 36 of the 54 holes in the National Invitational Tournament were completed today, with New Mexico finishing atop the 15 team field with one round to play. The Lobos, who shot a 560 (-16) took the lead in the first round, and have held on tight. Host Arizona placed two teams in the field and saw Philip Bagdade, a member of its “B” line up shoot a 137 (-7), tying him for first with New Mexico’s Nick Geyer.

New Mexico has all five competitors in the top 25, and three in the top ten, giving them a three stroke lead in the tournament. Similarly, UNLV has three players in the top ten and all five players in the top 16, but none higher than eighth, leaving the Rebels’ effort three strokes short of first. Arizona and defending champion TCU are tied for third with a 568 (-8) stroke total. Kent State is in fifth at 572 (-4). Sixth place Texas is the last team under par at (-1). The Longhorns’ second round of 293 (+5) dropped them out of second place, where they finished round one.

Nick Geyer lead the tournament after round one with his 66 (-6), two strokes better than the competition. He held on in the second round, but is now joined by Philip Bagdade, competing for Arizona’s “B” team at 137 (-7). TCU’s James Sacheck is in third at five under. Sacheck picked up two of those strokes at the 183 yard par-3 12th, on which he blasted a hole-in-one. There is a four way tie for fourth: Brett Cairns of Kent State, Jonathan Khan of Arizona and Johan De Beer andAlexander Knappe (competing as an individual)of TCU.

The final round will begin tomorrow at 7:30 a.m. PDT. The National Invitational Tournament is contested at Tucson National, a par 72, 7,094 yard layout.
