TUCSON, Ariz. (Oct. 4) - Receiving offensive production from five different players, the University of Arizona women's soccer team pounded Youngstown State, 7-0, on Friday in the first round of the Arizona Tournament. The Wildcats improve to 5-3-1 on the year, tying last year's win total, and register their fifth shutout of the season, the most shutouts since the 1997 squad registered six. On an eight-game losing skid, the Penguins slipped to 1-9-0 on the year.

After playing almost 24 minutes of scoreless soccer, Wildcat freshman forward Kelly Nelson (Lakewood, Calif./Mayfair HS) broke the shutout with her eighth goal of the season, going one-on-one with Youngstown State goalkeeper Caitlin Bestard and sending a shot in from the left side. Fellow freshman Courtney Moseley (Redondo Beach, Calif./Bishop Montgomery HS) was credited with the assist.

The Penguins held the Cats off for another 17 minutes, then Arizona exploded for three goals in the final four-and-a-half minutes of the first half. Freshman forward Maggie MacCool (Sammamish, Wash./Skyline HS) collected the rebound from a shot by rookie Mallory Miller (Tucson, Ariz./Salpointe Catholic HS) and dented the net at 40:31.

Not even three minutes later, MacCool struck again, making a great run through the Penguin defense to score off a set-up by freshman Lisa Kosena (Englewood, Colo./Cherry Creek HS). Fifty-six seconds after that, freshman midfielder Nikki David (Manhattan Beach, Calif./Mira Costa HS) sent a pass from the right side to fellow freshman Traci Adler (Van Nuys, Calif./Notre Dame HS), who logged her first collegiate goal at 44:10. Arizona held a 4-0 lead at halftime.

Kosena started things off early in the second half, sending the Cats up 5-0 with her goal from Mallory Miller at 49:18. Kelly Nelson struck again in the 58th minute, taking advantage of a scramble in the goal mouth to head-in her second goal of the match. Sophomore defender Lindsey Peeples (Arcadia, Calif. HS) was credited with the assist on the goal. In the 61st minute, junior midfielder Lindsey Greenwood (Davenport, Iowa/Pleasant Valley HS) gathered a short clear from a YSU defender and sent a rocket from the top of the box to cap the victory for the Wildcats.

Freshman goalkeepers Natalie Juarez (Claremont, Calif. HS) and Amanda Martin (Franklin, Tenn. HS) each played one half for Arizona, combining for the team's fifth shutout of the season. Juarez made the only save of the evening for the Cats. Arizona out-shot Youngstown State, 35-2, and had a 19-1 advantage in shots on-goal.

Earlier in the evening, Saint Louis shutout Idaho State, 1-0, to advance to the championship game of the tournament. Idaho State and Youngstown State will face one another in the second round at 11 a.m. on Sunday, Oct. 6, followed by Saint Louis and Arizona vying for the tournament title at 2 p.m. Both matches will be played at Murphey Soccer Stadium, 15th Street and Plumer Avenue.
